Why read 20 minutes a night?

I came across this image this afternoon and thought it was worth sharing… In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it can be easy to let reading slip by the wayside! Check back later this week for a list of our favorite books if you're looking for some holiday suggestions :-).

Myth Manics...

This week, we've read and discussed several Greek myths. This book has been very popular and would be a great holiday gift if you're on the lookout...  It is a classic and the illustrations are wonderful :-). Here is a link on Amazon, but it is also often in the bargain section at Barnes and Noble. Happy Reading!

Book Orders

The next Scholastic book order is due on Friday. I don't usually mention specific items and don't want to pressure anyone to order, but there are some great choices/prices in the catalogs that came home on Monday - it's a great time to stock up on books in preparation for summer reading! I will do this order and one more in mid-May.

- The Spring Gift Books Catalog has a Phineas and Ferb "Science Nerds Rule!" kit with experiments as well as a Wayside School value pack.

- The Lucky Catalog has several "My Weird School" books. These have been a HUGE hit in our room this year. There are also vlaue packs of Cam Jansen, Encyclopedia Brown, National Geographic True Stories, and the Rainbow Magic Fairies.

- The Magic Tree House Catalog includes several Fact Trackers for $2.99 instead of the usual $4.99 or $5.99. Fact Trackers are informational text chapter books that are really well written and presented... a variety of topics, from animals to Abe Lincoln!

Connect 4 Boards

We will be continuning with the Connect Four homework format. There will be a new board next week - we are diving head-first into geometry and the foundations of mulitplication (repeated addition and arrays) and need to have our key terms and vocabulary mastered before we start applying them in HW activities. I will add the updated boards to the blog so that you are able to print from home if ever needed. Here is a link to the current board!

Weekly Reading Logs

We've added the reading log back into our routine! I would like to increase consistancy between the same chapter books being read both at school and at home - so, if your child is reading a chapter book at home, please encourage them to bring it to school to read during our Daily 5 time. If a chapter book from our class library is started at school, it may certainly travel back and forth between school and home. This continuity of one story at a time is key as we are becoming avid chapter book readers and continuing to increase our levels of comprehension :-).

Students will have time at the end of Daily 5 each day to add to their reading log so that we are all on the same page about what is being read at school and at home. Please encourage your child to read for at least 15 minutes every night!

Got Paint Chips?

shades_of_meaning.jpg
(image from http://landini.wikispaces.com/Tutoring+ESL)

We will be creating a rainbow of words as we discuss "shades of meaning" with vocabulary words. If you are able to swing through Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. this weekend and snag some paint chips to send in, please do! We will start making our rainbow on Monday :-).

Class Dojo

We have started using Class Dojo, an app that allows us to track our classroom behavior. Each student was assigned an avatar, and their avatar earns or loses points as they are "caught" demonstrating good or bad behavior throughout the day. Teachers are able to assign points from the Class Dojo website or a mobile device, so our points travel with us throughout the day. We are also able to check in on our avatars through the Smart Board. I am still exploring, but keep an eye out for a letter that will give you a code to log on to Class Dojo and check on your child's progress!
