Sound Focus and Fact Fluency Homework Changes

Here are the documents that were emailed this weekend regarding changes to our sound focus and fact fluency homework!

Conservation Commercials

We finished up our first Fusion unit by writing and producing commercials. Our classroom became the home of "Lang-STEM Production Studios" on Monday, and we worked hard as we brainstormed, completed story maps, wrote scripts, designed our sets and costumes, and rehearsed! Our commercials include many common elements of advertising, including public service announcements, appearances by celebrities, and jingles. Take a look!

Book Orders

The Scholastic books have arrived! Students will bring their books home today. I will pass out the next book order tomorrow and it will be due next Friday, the 19th.

If you're able to order online, please do so - we earn more points that way and I'm able to buy more books for our classroom library :-).  If not, no problem! I can send in a check, but not cash.

Our classroom code for online ordering is L3686.

Video Newsletter Issue "4"

Issue 3 was not uploaded due to technical difficulties... Team Zwangerall gives a re-cap of Issue 3 and new information in this video :-). Click Here

I have practice packets scanned for time, money, and general addition. If you would like any of these (or all of the above), please let me know! I will email fact practice pages this afternoon. They are grouped by family (1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, etc.) and are an alternative to Sumdog or flashcards if you're looking to mix things up a bit!

Field trip pictures will be posted this evening.... Have a wonderful weekend!

Garbology

On Friday, Mrs. Martindale challenged us to become "garbologists" and uncover how much food has been going to waste during the third grade lunch period.

Aprons and gloves were necessary!

You mean we have to go through THAT!?

We sorted the trash into plastic, paper, styrofoam, food, and liquid waste categories...

Finally finished sorting!

Each group recorded data about their garbage... How many plastic items could have been recycled? How many paper items?

We weighed the food waste bucket...

... And discovered that the third graders had wasted over 9 pounds of food!

Our next task is to figure out how to decrease this amount of waste. We'll be exploring several possibilities - including vermicomposting and a school-wide recycling plan - in the next few weeks!

Weekly Recap

We got to know our new friends through a "Find Somebody Who" activity...

Built our Read-to-Self Stamina...

Went on a scavenger hunt around the room for /o/ words...

Introduced Math Workshop... One of our first activities was working with unifix cubes to create a structure and write a corresponding number sentence. Aidan, Kendra, Rowan, Lindsay, and Grant worked together to build Sparky himself!

And last but not least, we dove foot-first into our Conservation unit by discussing a "Carbon footprint", and comparing a Carbon footprint to a real footprint.

Photo Release Forms, Market Day, and Spirit Wear... Oh my!

Please sign and return the media release form that was sent home on the first day of school if you have not done so already. If you would like to "opt out" and not release your child's photo, just fill in the box at the bottom of the page... Thanks!

The first Market Day orders are due tomorrow. Pick up day is next Monday, the 10th.

Spirit Wear order forms went home today and are due on the 14th... Show some Summit Pride!

Looking forward to a wonderful Wednesday (already!)

Sound Focus

Our sound focus for this week is the /o/ sound. Today, we brainstormed a list of words that fit the four sound pictures of the /o/ sound. These sound pictures (also known as spelling variations) are o, aw, a, and au. This list is NOT a spelling list: when we do our sound focus assessments, we will see these words mixed with other words.

Some suggested ways to practice this sound focus:
- Write a story full of /o/ words.
- Brainstorm words that rhyme with the words we thought of in class. Do they include the /o/ sound focus?
- Practice writing /o/ words with fun colors or handwriting.
- Illustrate 5 /o/ words.

Our second grade team will be creating weekly video newsletters. Expect to see them posted over the weekend, usually on Friday afternoons. We did establish a "one take" policy, so please excuse any mistakes or excessive giggling :-).

Note: the Investigations book mentioned in this video did not go home on Friday as originally planned and will be sent tomorrow (Tuesday).

Check it out!
